The International University (IU) is an American university operating as a foreign institution in Austria. IU’s programs are licensed by the State of Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education.
Accreditation and licensure is sometimes confusing internationally where licensure is provided through a federal ministry and may also in some cases serve a similar purpose as accreditation. These two procedures – licensing and accreditation – are differentiated in the U.S..
In the U.S., there is no federal accreditation or federal permission to operate a higher educational institution. This is provided on a state level. The legal authority of IU’s degrees is granted by the State of Alabama where IU is licensed as an institution of higher learning. This is not an accreditation process but a legal permission for the issuing of degrees (see license below).
U.S. accreditation is a quality-assurance peer-review process conducted by independent, private accrediting bodies. It is important for IU stakeholders to understand that IU’s degrees are not Austrian degrees but legally conferred American degrees. IU is headquartered in the U.S.A. in Montgomery, Alabama, and operates a campus in Vienna, Austria.
