IU's Christian Dimension
What does IU’s Christian Dimension mean?

IU’s goal is to provide for the education of the whole being. Like many other American institutions, IU recognizes that an education which prepares students only academically and professionally, but not also spiritually, is not a complete education. Since its founding, The International University has been based on Christian principles emphasized in the Bible.

Part of the quest for a successful life includes answering man’s deep questions concerning why we are here, the purpose of our life, and preparation for the life hereafter. The Christian dimension at IU means that we believe every human being is a unique creation of God, made in the image of God, and, therefore, possesses an undying soul. The Bible points the way in answering these questions which have eternal implications. The Christian dimension also indicates that we believe in a sovereign God who created and sustains the universe, directs the affairs of men but allows free choice, and gave His son as the ultimate sacrifice for the penalty of mankind’s sin and disobedience.

Aside from these eternal questions, IU believes that the Bible provides guidance for daily living in teaching us how to treat one another, tolerance toward others, benevolence in helping those in need, serving mankind, how to handle conflict, how to have a sound mind, and how to live at peace with others.

The Christian dimension is expressed, among other ways, in the following:

  • Biblical history, literature and philosophy courses form part of the General Education requirements.
  • The IU Board and Administration, and some of IU’s staff, faculty and students are committed to the Christian faith.
  • IU’s Convocation emphasizes Bible reading and prayer, in addition to guest speakers on a variety of current topics.
  • People who believe in the value of Christian education make sacrificial donations to help international students have the opportunity for studying their chosen majors and also learn more about Christianity.
  • IU provides opportunities for Christian worship and service.

What the Christian Dimension does NOT mean:

  • It does not mean students must be Christian to enroll or that students must change their religion. IU has served students from over 100 nations, from many different religions, and those with no religion.
  • It does not mean that Christians are treated differently than those of other religions. There is no discrimination at IU on the basis of religious, socio-economic, ethnic, or other grounds.

The Bible states, “God has placed eternity in the hearts of men.” (Old Testament, Ecclesiastes 3:11). Since an eternal longing for God is a part of the very fiber of the makeup of mankind, IU believes its service to its students must attempt to foster and train this most important part of each man and woman.
